A Dongguan cutting oil manufacturer explains the causes of odor deterioration in cutting fluids. The correct method—“slowly add the concentrated cutting fluid concentrate to water while stirring thoroughly”—is crucial. If the mixing is reversed, it can easily lead to poor-quality diluted solutions (insufficient emulsification, large oil droplet size, and instability).

Dongguan cutting oil manufacturer A Brief Discussion on the Use and Daily Maintenance Management of Fine Water-Soluble Cutting Fluids

  1. Water-soluble cutting fluids require that the appropriate purchase quantity and procurement cycle be determined based on the factory’s consumption rate, ensuring first-in, first-out (FIFO) practices to prevent product deterioration and failure due to prolonged storage.

  2. The correct method—slowly adding the concentrated cutting fluid concentrate to water while stirring thoroughly—can easily lead to poor-quality diluted solutions (inadequate emulsification, large oil droplet size, and insufficient stability) if the reverse procedure is followed.

  3. If stable lubrication performance of the cutting fluid is required to ensure both the machining quality of parts and the tool life, it is essential to maintain a consistently stable process concentration. Moreover, a stable concentration that does not fall below the minimum threshold guarantees the cutting fluid’s consistent and reliable ability to inhibit bacterial growth and prevent corrosion of both parts and equipment. Therefore, it is crucial to clearly define the management responsibilities of the manufacturing unit for cutting fluids and establish a traceable management system with clearly assigned responsibilities. In daily monitoring, only the concentration, pH value, floating oil, and chip accumulation need to be tracked. As a result, the performance, service life, and consumption of water-soluble cutting fluids will all be significantly improved.

  4. If the machine tool is shut down for any reason (due to maintenance, absence of machining tasks, or especially during extended holidays), the cutting fluid can easily become contaminated and develop an unpleasant odor due to the lack of movement, which promotes the growth of large numbers of bacteria. To prevent this, add fresh, highly concentrated cutting fluid to each machine tool, raising the concentration in the fluid tank to around 10–15% (fresh, undiluted cutting fluid has enhanced antibacterial properties). When restarting the machine, dilute the fluid back to its normal working concentration before use. During periods of shutdown, if someone is available to operate the machine, they can activate the cutting fluid system and run it in a circulating mode for half an hour each day.

  5. When the condition of the water-soluble cutting fluid deteriorates to the point where it needs to be replaced, add an appropriate amount of system cleaner in advance to the cutting fluid in the machine tool that is about to be replaced. This will circulate through the system, killing bacteria and emulsifying oil contaminants in the piping, thereby preparing the system for the subsequent fluid replacement. Then, follow the prescribed procedure to drain the old fluid, remove any sediment, and add a 1-2% dilute solution as a recovery rinse—without reducing costs—and prevent the new fluid from being quickly contaminated and degraded by residual, aged cutting fluid and oil residues.

Dongguan cutting oil manufacturer What causes the odor of cutting fluid to deteriorate?

Cutting fluids are used in metalworking. In hot weather and high temperatures, they can emit a pungent odor that affects the working environment in factory workshops. Long-term inhalation of cutting fluids is harmful to health. There are three main reasons why cutting fluids deteriorate and develop an unpleasant odor:

  (1) Excessive impurities: During the machining process, mechanical parts generate various types of dust and debris. When the coolant circulates back to the tank, it becomes contaminated with these particles. If the tank is left uncleaned for an extended period, a thick layer of sludge will accumulate at the bottom. This sludge provides an ideal breeding ground for bacteria, which continuously consume the active ingredients in the cutting fluid, producing pollutants that cause the cutting fluid to deteriorate and develop an unpleasant odor.

  (2) When mixed with impurities, cutting fluids—typically formulated through scientific blending of mineral oil and various functional additives—can have their composition compromised if other impure substances are introduced during use. On the other hand, impurities that float on the surface of the cutting fluid can isolate the fluid’s surface from the air, fostering the proliferation of large numbers of bacteria and thereby degrading the fluid’s composition.

  (3) If the tank is left uncleaned for a long time, pollutants that accumulate over an extended period can contaminate and degrade the cutting fluid, providing an ideal breeding ground for bacteria. If the tank remains uncleaned for too long, each time new cutting fluid is added, the degradation process will continue to accelerate, resulting in a significant waste of resources.
